Shortly after 1pm on January 9, 2009 Woonsocket Fire Control dispatched a first alarm assignment to 134 Asylum St. for a reported structure fire. While the companies were en route, fire control informed that they were receiving multiple calls.
Ladder 1 was first on scene and reported smoke showing from the second floor. A few moments later, the officer of Ladder 1 confirmed a Code Red in a 2.5 story wood-frame occupied residence. It was confirmed that all occupants were out of the home. Units encountered heavy fire on the first floor and the fire was extending to the upper floor.
Deputy Chief Bacon arrived on scene and established command while the Woonsocket Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack. The roof was opened by Ladder 1 and the companies made great progress in stopping the fire before it totally destroyed the home. Woonsocket Fire Chief Ken Finlay arrived on scene and assumed command. Ladder 2 was dispatched as the FAST company and Engine 2 was special signaled to the scene.
After the fire was knocked down, an extensive overhaul operation began. Firefighters began checking for extension, mopping up hot spots, and ventilating the structure. The fire is being investigated by Captain Tom Papa of the Woonsocket Fire Department and the Woonsocket Police Department.
