2nd Alarm - Cumberland, RI 12/2/2008 : At 11:38pm on December 2, 2008 Cumberland Fire Dispatch notified companies of a report of flames coming from a dwelling at 1150 Mendon Rd. Units arrived on scene and reported a working fire. Companies encountered a one story wood-frame unoccupied hair salon with heavy smoke present.

An initial interior attack was attempted by Cumberland Engines 22 and 41. Vertical ventilation was completed by Cumberland Truck 5. Ventilation was hampered by building construction as the pitched roof was built over an existing flat roof. The interior attack was abandoned as the fire quickly progressed and conditions began to deteriorate. Command ordered a defensive operation and Truck 5 positioned their aerial device for use of the ladder pipe. Heavy black smoke erupted from the vent hole and windows preceding heavy fire. There was a collapse of the pitched roof but the flat roof sustained the impact.

Multiple hand lines and deck guns were used to darken down the flames. Mutual aid from Lincoln responded to the scene to assist the Cumberland firefighters bring the compliment of firefighting personnel to a second alarm equivalent. Once the fire was placed under control and the building was deemed safe to reenter, firefighters conducted overhaul and assisted the investigators as needed. There were no reported injuries.

During this operation, a second reported structure fire was dispatched for a restaurant approximately a half mile away from this incident. That fire was contained to a kitchen area and was handled by reserve Cumberland and mutual aid units. Both fires are suspicious and are actively being investigated by the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal’s Office and detectives from the Cumberland Police Department.

3rd Alarm - Woonsocket, RI 8/28/2008 : On Thursday August 28, 2008 at around 5pm the Woonsocket Fire Department dispatched a first alarm assignment to the area of Summer St. and Winter St. for a reported structural fire. En route, units were advised that fire control was receiving multiple calls reporting a fire. While responding, the on duty deputy chief transmitted a code red advising they had a working fire, as there was a column of smoke visible from a distance. The address of the structure was 241 Summer St. in the city’s north end.

Engine 2 arrived first on scene and reported a well involved 2.5 story wood frame residential dwelling. They encountered heavy fire showing on the 1st floor with the fire rapidly extending to the upper floors. A second alarm was quickly transmitted and companies began an aggressive attack. The fire was advancing rapidly and Woonsocket firefighters began to darken any visible fire from the outside before making entry into the structure. A third alarm was transmitted and in addition to filling the empty city stations, Cumberland Hill’s Engine 41 and air supply unit responded to the scene to assist Woonsocket’s five engines, two ladders, and two rescues already operating.

Once inside firefighters began to extinguish the blaze on all floors using numerous handlines. A ladder company ascended to the roof to begin vertical ventilation. The ladder company reported the roof was starting to feel spongy and crews were reporting fire conditions inside the structure were rapidly deteriorating. Woonsocket’s Fire Chief Ken Finlay ordered crews out of the structure and defensive operations commenced.

When the fire was knocked down from the outside, crews reentered the structure to begin another aggressive attack. The building concealed many pockets of fire and companies located and extinguished the remaining areas involved in this stubborn fire. Multiple attack lines and extensive overhaul were needed to bring this blaze under control. There is no word on any injuries but a cat was rescued from the building and returned to the pet’s owners. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Vehicle Recovery - Cumberland, RI 2/1/08 : In the early morning of Friday February 1, 2008, the Cumberland Hill Fire Department was dispatched to Rt. 99 for a vehicle into the water. The body of water is a small pond located between the north and southbound lanes. Apparently the driver of the vehicle lost control, drove through a chain link fence, down an embankment, and onto the frozen pond. The victim self-extricated herself and walked home, calling the police hours later. It was determined that no other individuals were in the vehicle and the vehicle would have to wait to daylight to be removed because the vehicle had already sunk through the ice. Members of the Cumberland Hill and North Cumberland Fire Department's assisted the tow company with removal of the vehicle from the pond. The entire operation took approximately one hour.
