Hello and welcome to Brett Anderson's Fireground Photography. Here you will find photo images of various emergency or training incidents from around the Southern New England area capturing the public safety sector at work.

I have been a firefighter for over 9 years, the past 7 as a career firefighter. I'd much rather be putting out fires than taking pictures of them, but that doesn't happen often so this hobby of mine is second best. I'm a member of the Providence Citywide Fire Network(Car 40) and a correspondent for the 1st Responder Newspaper. Thank you and check back often for updates.

Working Fire - Woonsocket, RI 1/9/2009 : Shortly after 1pm on January 9, 2009 Woonsocket Fire Control dispatched a first alarm assignment to 134 Asylum St. for a reported structure fire. While the companies were en route, fire control informed that they were receiving multiple calls.

Ladder 1 was first on scene and reported smoke showing from the second floor. A few moments later, the officer of Ladder 1 confirmed a Code Red in a 2.5 story wood-frame occupied residence. It was confirmed that all occupants were out of the home. Units encountered heavy fire on the first floor and the fire was extending to the upper floor.

Deputy Chief Bacon arrived on scene and established command while the Woonsocket Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack. The roof was opened by Ladder 1 and the companies made great progress in stopping the fire before it totally destroyed the home. Woonsocket Fire Chief Ken Finlay arrived on scene and assumed command. Ladder 2 was dispatched as the FAST company and Engine 2 was special signaled to the scene.

After the fire was knocked down, an extensive overhaul operation began. Firefighters began checking for extension, mopping up hot spots, and ventilating the structure. The fire is being investigated by Captain Tom Papa of the Woonsocket Fire Department and the Woonsocket Police Department.

2nd Alarm - Cumberland, RI 12/2/2008 : At 11:38pm on December 2, 2008 Cumberland Fire Dispatch notified companies of a report of flames coming from a dwelling at 1150 Mendon Rd. Units arrived on scene and reported a working fire. Companies encountered a one story wood-frame unoccupied hair salon with heavy smoke present.

An initial interior attack was attempted by Cumberland Engines 22 and 41. Vertical ventilation was completed by Cumberland Truck 5. Ventilation was hampered by building construction as the pitched roof was built over an existing flat roof. The interior attack was abandoned as the fire quickly progressed and conditions began to deteriorate. Command ordered a defensive operation and Truck 5 positioned their aerial device for use of the ladder pipe. Heavy black smoke erupted from the vent hole and windows preceding heavy fire. There was a collapse of the pitched roof but the flat roof sustained the impact.

Multiple hand lines and deck guns were used to darken down the flames. Mutual aid from Lincoln responded to the scene to assist the Cumberland firefighters bring the compliment of firefighting personnel to a second alarm equivalent. Once the fire was placed under control and the building was deemed safe to reenter, firefighters conducted overhaul and assisted the investigators as needed. There were no reported injuries.

During this operation, a second reported structure fire was dispatched for a restaurant approximately a half mile away from this incident. That fire was contained to a kitchen area and was handled by reserve Cumberland and mutual aid units. Both fires are suspicious and are actively being investigated by the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal’s Office and detectives from the Cumberland Police Department.
